The Year That Was: 1913

A look at history one year at a time, from as many angles as possible. Famous people, infamous people, obscure people; wars, revolutions, peace treaties, art, science, sports, religion. The big picture, in an entertaining podcast package.

1913 was a remarkable year: the Paris Peace Conference created the modern world. The Spanish Flu Pandemic killed millions. The US Congress banned the sale of alcohol and permitted votes for women, a handful of baseball players took bribes to throw the World Series, and the First Red Scare terrified Americans. This is a podcast about science, technology, civil rights, colonialism, civil war, revolution, art, music and life.

I began the podcast in 2019 and wrapped it up in 2022. As well as researching and writing the text, I learned how to record, edit and produce from my tiny home office right through the pandemic.

With an Apple Podcasts average rating of 4.9, The complete season of The Year That Was is now available on its website as well as through most podcast apps.

Decomposed

Decomposed breaks down the stories that have shaped classical music, from secrets and scandals to acts of sheer genius. Hear these stories accompanied by the symphonies, operas and other masterpieces they inspired.

Hosted by Jade Simmons, a classical concert pianist and storyteller, the first season of Decomposed takes on gender expectations, Cold War propaganda and the danger of putting your personal life on the stage. Produced in partnership with Classical Minnesota Public Radio.

Decomposed was named one of the best podcasts of 2019 by Time Magazine, Esquire and IndieWire.

I began work on Decomposed in 2018, helping to develop the concept, identify the stories, and write and research the text.
